It is commonly assumed that what little scientific advance there might have been in the Middle Ages was held back by the power of the Church. But, in fact, there was important progress in science and technology during the medieval period. And the influence of the Church was generally positive even if it imposed strict limits beyond which philosophers should not tread. James Hannam’s book ‘God’s Philosophers: How the Medieval World Laid the Foundations of Modern Science’ was short listed for the Royal Society Prize for Science Books 2010
