John summarizes the history of the universe, from the Big Bang through the formation of galaxies and the Solar System, and the history of the Earth and some of the special factors enabling the formation of life.  Our future will be hot as the Sun gets brighter, and then dark as the Sun and all the other stars burn out and the universe continues to expand.  Nobel-winning discoveries are key parts of the story, and more are yet to come, as the nature of the cosmic dark matter and dark energy are determined, and the details of the Big Bang are elucidated through further microwave studies.  He shows some of the ambitious projects currently being built or planned to extend our knowledge of astronomy, including the James Webb Space Telescope.
